The Footlights theater class is studying "Classroom Drama, The Most Fun You'll Every Have!" by Judy Miller.  In this weeks lesson we discussed basic stage directions and body positions.  Below is a copy of the universal standard for stage directions.  Students learned that at one time most stages were "raked" or slanted downwards toward the audience.  Thus when an actor moved forward towards the audience, they were actually moving "Down Stage."
We then went on to discuss the types of stages and the audience relation to those types of stages and the proper body positions necessary to keep the actor visible on each type of stage.  Below is an excellent video describing in detail the types of stages and how a production is effected by the performance location.

At SELAH, we are currently utilizing a proscenium stage with the audience directly in front of the action.  But knowing the SELAH Performers and their type of live, active and exciting productions, we will no doubt utilize as much space in the performance hall as possible!
