Tragedy and Comedy

Today the Footlights had a brief lesson on the "History of the Theater," where they learned that Comedy and Tragedy masks are commonly referred to as theatre masks or drama masks. They have been adopted as the universal symbol for theatre. The origins stem from ancient Greece when actors always wore masks on stage.

They were instructed to return to class next week with a colored version of the masks, either the ones on their history handout or new and original masks they draw themselves.  Below is a brief tutorial on how to draw the masks, but I hope each student will infuse their own personality in each of their drawings, and bring something original!  I will post some of their creations here next week after they return them to class.  And finally, for a great tour through the History of the Theater, visit: Wild Wonderful World of Theater History!
